People are our community, this community vibrancy is eroded and potential wasted because too many homes and shops, residential and commercial properties, and undeveloped lots in the areas people live and work sit empty or underutilised for years. Here is a solution...

Fair Rates

I will table differential rates for Short Stay Accomodations beyond PPOR, commercial & residential properties underutilised or vacant for three-plus months if not otherwise used for socially beneficial purposes, & reduce hurdles permitting said purpose

Homes are a human right, and we need more homes desperately. These indisputable truths are recognised in our communities because everything else, good and bad, flows on from them. Money going to rents cannot be spent in the local economy, which is why people must come before profit! There is something we can do...

Homes for Hobart

I will push for support & facilitate forward looking Mixed-Use Medium-Density development prioritising homes, including public ones, for families & kinships without a pre-existing domicile, using innovative enviromental material science & methods.

Happier and healthier. The free buses and public transport initiative is commendable, and must remain in-place because of its positive-impacts for our communities and environment, so we must seize the day and build upon it to future-proof our bus stops and infrastructure. What we will create...

Better Buses

I will facilitate & encourage community ownership of their local stops by permitting building their own Equal Access compliant shelters, alongside expansion of supporting infrustructure by replacing left-side on-street parking with a Bus-Only Lanes.

Our CBD is unwell. And reinvigorating the Central Business District and its surrounds has been a long-standing challenge exacerbated by Fear Uncertainty and Doubt which, in spite of being built on genuinely valid concerns, stall bold changes which would help. The antidote...

A People Focused CBD

I will advocate creating walkable community-building spaces & free third places by trialling an extention of Elizabeth Street Mall to encompass Collins & Liverpool up to Harrington Street for peak Summer socialising season like Dark MOFO in Winter.

Local Governance is community power and should meet what community actually needs. Currently no immediate tools people can use to hold their representatives to account for their behaviour or integrity exist, instead we must wait four years! We need power in the hands of people not just to have Your Say, but to effect real change democratically & economically. How we make it happen...

Empower Local Democracy

I will put forward that electors should have the power to "fire" their representatives via recall, initiate & utilise a Citizen Assembly to guide council decisions, & investigate mechanisms for more power over decisions for the local-economy.

About me

I'd like to share a little bit about myself, what I believe, and why I feel I'd be a decent councillor and deputy mayor for your Hobart City Council.

I hope by speaking plainly, even if you say "I disagree and dislike what Sam stands for..." you'll also say "... but at least he's honest! [and handsome]"

I am a socialist. I believe that democracy should extend not just to politics, but also the economy and our workplaces as well as our day-to-day lives.

I am not perfect. I'm just a person who, perhaps like yourself, is just trying to get by as best I can. Someone who may not have done everything right in their life, but certainly has tried not to do others wrong.

I am a contributor. Being a finalist for Volunteering Tasmania's Individual Impact Award 2025, and recipient of the Unions Tasmania's Toni Miles-Bennett Community Contribution Award 2026. Also invitations to speak on panels, conferences, organisations, and interviews on radio, news, and social-media.

I am a creative. I enjoy making art, participating in theatre and film, reading about Arthurian myths and cybernetics, and practice historical martial arts when I can.

I am your candidate. And while brief, I hope you now have a better sense of my character, temperament, and personality. While eclectic, I believe with your help we can shake up HCC to create a council that can do more!
